Alexander Graham Bell: a distinguished scientist, innovator and the originator; known chiefly as the inventor of the ‘Telephone’, was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. For most of his life, the younger Alexander was known as “Aleck” to family and friends. He had two brothers, Melville and Edward, both of whom died from tuberculosis. Alexander was home schooled by his mother, who instilled in him an infinite curiosity about the world around him. He received one year of formal education in private school and two years at Royal High School from which he dropped out.

In 1864 Bell began work as a teacher at Elgin’s Western House Academy. In 1871, He opened school for the teachers of deaf in Boston and in 1873 became professor of vocal physiology at city’s university. In 1876, at the age of 29, Bell invented his TELEPHONE. He devised over fifty other inventions that were well ahead of their time. In 1877, he formed ‘Bell Telephone Company’, where he’d make millions; becoming one of the richest men alive during his life and in the same year married Mabel Hubbard and had two daughters. His rare intellectual inquisitiveness kept him regularly searching and striving through a long and productive life.

Among one of his first innovations after the telephone was the “photo phone,” a device that enabled sound to be transmitted on a beam of light. Bell regarded the photo phone as “The greatest invention I have ever made; greater than the telephone", He later improved this and produced a device called a telephone probe

Bell had begun experimenting with propellers and kites. His work led him to apply the concept of the tetrahedron to kite design as well as to create a new form of architecture. In 1883 Bell invented the grapho phone, the first practical system of sound recording. In 1898 Bell became president of the National geographic society. In his later years Bell took a keen interest in aeronautics.

In 1919 produced a hydrofoil craft. He was a remarkable person whose achievements encouraged young scientists. He devoted his life to the benefit of humankind. He worked in the fields of medicine, marine engineering, genetics, electrical science, sheep-breeding, artificial respiration, desalinization, water distillation and greatly, advanced the methods of teaching deaf people to communicate. One of his most famous students Helen Keller, who came to him as a child unable to see, hear and speak; attributed its occurrence to bell “The door through which I should pass from darkness into light". Bell died in Nova Scotia, Canada, on 2nd August, 1922.
